There is a Human Face to Suffering

This has been very hard for me to write, and I've been debating on whether or not to post it. None of this is about me and I don't want to turn it into something about me. I do, however, want to say a bit about Ukraine and a bit of why this conflict feels personal. About six years ago, I was wandering around the library. I wanted to read something, but I didn't know what. Nothing sounded right. I ended up taking a detour out of my usual fantasy section, and into historical nonfiction. I ran across a book called Bloodlands by Timothy Snyder. On a complete lark, I checked it out. Before this point, I'd read nothing at all about that part of the world. I knew Ukraine was near Russia, but that's about it. Then, I got this book and in some ways, it's completely changed my life. I'm getting ready to release the next book in my series called The Bloodlands , which means I'm doing a whole bunch of research again (mostly on WWII). I figured it was time to dust this fledgling blog off and post some of my research here. Recently I ran across something called The Gleiwitz Incident, which is also considered the incident that started World War II. For a war that had such a profound impact on the world, it seems a bit odd to me that it isn't common knowledge. This specific incident is hugely influential for an incident that takes place in An Elegy for Hope. Deep Dive: Peter the Great and All His Teeth

When I read about nobility, it tends to be these weird details I focus on. I think because, for example, Peter the Great is such a huge figure, the fact he thought it was fun to pull teeth out and then save them is just odd enough to balance all that other stuff out in my head. That, and he had a real zeal for all things medical. The guy loved to operate on both people who needed operating and cadavers alike. Of course, no one would ever dare tell a Tsar they aren't absolutely the best at all things, so no we really don't know how good he was at medicine. So here you've got the kind of morbid curiosity that gets me going, and thus, the topic of today's post.
